Jarritt A Sheel

Jarritt is a doctoral candidate at Teachers College, Columbia University, where he is completing his graduate studies music education. Jarritt and his family are Bronx residents. He also works at Jazz at Lincoln Center in their youth programs, as an ensemble director of the youth workshop band, within the education department of JALC. He leads his own live ensemble called "The Freedom Now Project" which weave diverse musical genres like jazz and hip-hop into a sonic tapestry serving as backdrop to critical contemporary social issues. He also coined a social media hashtag #hiphopmusiced to start dialogue around the topic of the inclusion of the hip-hop movement in teacher training programs. He a member and board member of the Association for Popular Music Education (APME), working exclusively on developing their collegiate program. Recently, Jarritt accepted a position in the Music Education program as a member of their core faculty at NYU. He is very proud to be a member of a new wave of collegiate music educators, as well as serve the students of the music education program at NYU.
