This interactive session explores augmenting programmatic music through a variety of technology. The session begins with a brief presentation on how we augmented programmatic music performed by a community band I worked with. Following the brief presentation, we will work together to augment a programmatic piece of music. The session will end with a discussion on what could be learned in a project like this and how we might implement similar projects in the settings we facilitate. A laptop or tablet is recommended for this session. This session will begin with a brief presentation on how I was asked to come up with ways to augment a traditional ensemble using a variety of technology. I will provide examples, discuss the process we took for each piece, and provide a behind the scenes look at the software (Ableton) and MIDI controllers we used. For instance, in the piece “Mekong” by Robert W. Smith, which is a programmatic piece about the Vietnam War, we augmented the ensemble by triggering water, plane, helicopter, gun, napalm, and other sounds to enhance the story of the piece. Following this brief presentation (most likely less than 20 minutes), we will select programmatic music and work in groups to come up with ways we can augment an music excerpt using the technology we have (I will bring some MIDI controllers to use with Ableton, and I will encourage others to download Soundplant). Once everyone starts working, I will walk around and facilitate by asking questions and guiding people through problem solving. The session will conclude with a discussion on how our classes might explore augmenting performances in the places we work.
